We operate 8 underground mines in Siberia and far-eastern Russia. Most of our mines extract seams of two to five metre thickness and all are accessed via inclines driven from the surface. Coal is typically transported from working areas to the surface by belt conveyor with only one mine using a shaft winder.
Over 65% of coal in Russia is produced now in open-pit mines. This method is safer for the miners, but results in much surface damage. In the Kuzbass and Donbass areas, however, mining continues primarily underground; this produces better-quality coal for making steel, but also leads to numerous accidents.
